During his long run on the show, which first co-starred Kathie Lee Gifford and later Kelly Ripa, Philbin was an avuncular, quirky, charmingly self-deprecating presence yet also capable of incisive and thoughtful interviews. He would go on to win three Emmy Awards for his work on the Live franchise. He was the initial host of ABCs primetime game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which was a ratings phenomenon when it first aired in 1999. Millionaire also earned him an Emmy Award for Best Game Show host in 2001. He received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Daytime Emmys in 2008. He also made countless appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, including a memorable stint where he guest-hosted as Letterman recovered from heart surgery in 2007. He retired from Live in 2011, though he continued to pop on in guest spots (playing himself) on television shows like Fresh off the Boat and Hot in Cleveland. ![]() He is also survived by three daughters, J.J.
